Disabilities are not always visible to the eye

Last week the Rotary Club of Crowley welcomed Madeline Landry from Southwest Louisiana Independence Center (SLIC). Landry who wears many hats, such as radio personality in the Lake Charles area, spoke to the club about being mindful of the disabilities that some individuals may have, even if the disability is not visible. SLIC provides information and referral, advocacy, peer counseling and other independent living services. “We work to develop community options for person with significant disabilities through our 21 parish region,” Landry said. “SLIC assist these individuals in ach
ieving and maintaining self-sufficient, productive lives.” Landry implored business owners to consider hiring more people with disabilities by finding something they can offer to your business and find self fulfilling work. She suggested to think outside the box and to welcome all individuals input, as everyone has something to offer and may see a way of tackling an obstacle a totally different way than it was handled before. Often people with disabilities are problem solvers that must “think outside the box” in order to live their day-to-day lives. Landry went on to encourage the club to evaluate what their own individual disabilities are and how that effects their lives where it be a physical or mental disability. Lastly Landry reminded the club that the disabled family is constantly growing and built of many people besides individuals who were born with a disability. At any moment you or someone you care about could become part of the disabled family from a major medical event or even a car wreck.
